Jed Brewer's New Album: God Quit

Jed Brewer has released his latest album God Quit. For those of you who don't know I first met Jed when I a student at the U. Jed's dad was the pastor at the Wesley Foundation on campus and we became friends since I spent A LOT of time there. Well, that and that he's a really great guy. Over the years I have collected his demos and albums and enjoyed not only his music but his point of view. His music is transparent, honest and real. The trashy braggadocio verses that litter popular music today is nonexistent in...

Gnarles Barkley + Star Wars = Freakin Awesome.

I caught this performance by newcomer Gnarles Barkley during the MTV Movie Awards on Thursday night. Gnarles Barkey is the collaboration between DJ Danger Mouse whose Grey Album mixed Jay-Z's Black Album with the Beatles White Album and Cee-Lo a veteran songwriter/producer/singer. What made this performance memorable was that each of the performers were wearing Star Wars costumes. Vader, rebel pilots, Imperial commanders, Jango Fett, a Jedi Knight and yes a Wookie were represented in the one song set. It was an impressive scene. You can see it for yourself below. Via Digg.

Save the Torch!

One of my favorite channels on XM Radio is The Torch. The Torch played a nice mix of Christian rap and rock. Of course I still listen to plenty of The Call but sometimes I want to mix it up on the XM dial. Unfortunately, The Phantom Tollbooth is now reporting that XM Radio has pulled The Torch. That’s right you will no longer be able to hear alternative Christian rock/rap on your XM receiver. It will be only available via the crappy online feed. But there is something you can do about it. Sign the Save The Torch...

Find new music via Pandora

Digital Life TV mentioned a site this week called Pandora. The site allows you to enter a band or song you like and it suggests similar bands. The really cool thing about the site is that it allows you to listen to the suggested music. If you like discovering new bands this is definitely worth a look.

Vote for Invisible Fireworks

One of my boys, Ryan, has a band, Invisible Fireworks. I love their sound. They were lucky enough to shoot an excellent music video for one of their songs, The Weather In My Eyes. This video is involved in a CBS4/Herald contest. Part of this contest is a reader vote. Voting ends on Friday so go and vote for Invisible Fireworks! Now Playing: Les Howard and Kari Haley - The Signal #7, 17th August 2005

Leigh Nash is back in the saddle

Leigh Nash, the lead singer of the dearly departed Sixpence None the Richer (My favorite band ever. Did I say ever? I meant EVER!), has announced that she will record a solo album due sometime in 2006. Excellent. If I can’t have Sixpence this might be something to curb my appetite. She also has made some of her music available via her myspace page. Too bad they’re not available for download. Via The Phantom Tollbooth's News. Now Playing: Les Howard and Kari Haley - The Signal #6, 10th August 2005

Night of Joy 2005 lineup announced

The 2005 Night of Joy lineup has been released and it’s not half bad. Performing artists include MercyMe, Casting Crowns, tobyMac, CeCe Winans, Kutless, Tree 63, and Further Seems Forever. This year’s Night of Joy will be held on Friday, September 9 and Saturday, September 10 from 7:30 – 12:30PM. I’ve been going to Night of Joy for almost twenty years (?!?!?) and I think it’s the most ‘comfortable’ concert festival I’ve ever been to. Disney does a great job of putting this thing on. I hope we can make this one but Lucy will be seven months preggers...

Rhythmic Funk

A friend of mine at work gave me a link to the Spam All-Stars. They’ve got this groovy latin funk sound going on. Check it out and let me know what you think (this means you Jed).  Now Playing: Vona - I'm Not Alone (Rough Mix)

Growing Young

How is it that Rich Mullins can put lyrics into a song that so poignantly explains my feelings? The world has been a darker place since you left Rich. We’ll see you when I get home. Growing Young I've gone so far from my home I've seen the world and I have known So many secrets I wish now I did not know 'Cause they have crept into my heart They have left it cold and dark And bleeding Bleeding and falling apart And everybody used to tell me big boys don't cry Well I've been around enough to...

Feeling Nostalgic

Lucy and I have been feeling a bit nostalgic over the past few days. It got so bad last night that we went to Dairy Queen (which ironically is next to a weight loss center) for dinner. Why? Dunno. Right now we’re just missing our old days at the U. So with that I give you Sixpence None the Richer’s A Million Parachutes since the chorus always reminds me of my days at Miami. Like a million parachutes The snow's coming down I'll lock up the front door And turn the lights down In the glow of the street...

Free your iTunes music!

I have a problem with iTunes. I’ve been using iTunes for over a year and a half now and I love it. But there is one thing that I haven’t used much of in iTunes is the music store. I’ve got a problem with spending money on music that I can’t archive or use with another mp3 player. That is until now. The hymn project allows you to use your iTunes music store music anywhere. The purpose of the Hymn Project is to allow you to exercise your fair-use rights under copyright law. The various software provided on this...

Concert Photography

Being a part of Call FM and having a kickin digital camera has added up to me taking a lot more photos of concerts. Lucky, I’ve found this three part article on concert photography at photo.net. The article is a little too technical for me but I’ve got to learn sometime right? Now Playing: Denison Marrs - Send Me an Angel

Great Thanksgiving Weekend

What an action packed weekend! I started out the weekend by running in the Miami Runners Turkey Trot. I've got a lot to say about this so that will be another post. Lucy and I also had a great Thanksgiving day spending alot of time with family. We also spent black Friday shopping where we bought a great new camera. We bought the Canon EOS Digital Rebel. I must say that it does everything that I want and about 100 things I know nothing about. On Sunday, I ran 10 miles (again more on this later) and spent some time with...

Nothing in this world compares to...

I've heard all the stories I've seen all the signs Witnessed all the glories Tasted all that's fine Nothing compares to the greatness of knowing you Lord. oh no, Nothing compares to the greatness of knowing you Lord, oh no... I see all the people Wasting all their time Building up their riches For a life that's fine But nothing compares to the greatness of knowing you Lord. oh no, Nothing compares to the greatness of knowing you Lord, oh no... And I find myself just living for today Cuz I don't know what tomorrow's gonna bring So no matter...

Goin' back to Disney, Disney, Disney

It's that time of year again boys and girls Night of Joy and Rock the Univerise is right around the corner. And as usual we will be heading up to Orlando for the festivities. I'm disappointed about the lineups this year. It seems that there is more pop artists than ever. What happened to the alternative artists? Lucy and I will be attending Night of Joy on Friday for Third Day and Rock the Universe on Saturday for Toby. Drop me a line if you'll be there. I have already booked a room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. I really...

Steve Taylor and Squint...In his own words

Last year Steve Taylor played at Cornerstone 2003. While at the festival he held a press conference where he was very candid about Squint and his other projects. The transcript of the press conference can be seen at The Phantom Toolbooth. On a side note, I've been ripping my Steve Taylor CD's to mp3 recently. It's great to hear his stuff again. Steve's music changed Christian music forever. It's because of him we've got radio stations like Call FM. So thanks Steve and come out with a new album already!

Holla for Dollas!

Yesterday kicked off Call FM's summer fund drive. For those of you who don't know. Call FM is a listener-supported radio station dedicated to delivering the message of Christ to the youth of South Florida. Last night I was supporting the fund drive on the air with DJ MSG. Although I wasn't at the top of my game, I had a blast. I'll be on again Wednesday night so listen to it at 91.7 in South Miami-Dade/Keys or online! And don't forget to pledge!
