Small Group Thoughts of Jorriss

Ideas and thoughts from a small group leader.
What if???

I had this idea. What if I started to write down what I've learned about leading and participating in small groups? What if I kept a chronicle of what I've seen God do though small groups? How would that change my thinking about small groups? How would that change my relationship with God? This blog is that chronicle. I don't know exactly what I'm going to focus on just yet but I'll figure it out. If you have a tip, idea or a story about your small group send it along. I'll post it.

That being said the first tip that I've got is ground rules. You need them. Your group needs them. Have you ever had someone in your small group talk too much or completely manipulate the conversation? Ya, me too. So that's why you need ground rules. Before the group starts explain that comments should be kept to two to three minutes. That should curtail the individual who likes to talk too much. Also, reinforce the fact that small groups are like Vegas, whatever said in small group stays in the small group. Your members need to feel safe and secure. So that if they say something personal it won't be printed in the church bulletin the next week. This will foster trust and conversation amongst your members.
